Many quotes - and misquotes - are easily accessible online. When using an author's exact words in your paper, be sure to identify the original source. For example, you may have seen this quotation on websites: "Be the change you want to see in the world." It is often attributed to Mahatma Gandhi. There is no record of Gandhi saying these words, however. The closest record remark is "If we could change ourselves, the tendencies in the world would also change. As a man changes his own nature, so does the attitude of the world change towards him. ... We need not wait to see what others do" (Gandhi, 1994, p. 241), To read more about how this happens, read "Falser words were never spoken" by Brian Morton in the New York Times.
