Websites such as Wikipedia, Investopedia, About.com, and The Onion (just to name a few), are user-generated platforms (meaning, anyone can contribute information to these sites, no matter their background or professional expertise).  Oftentimes, these sites are referred to as “Fake News”. Therefore, they are not reviewed by experts (peer reviewed), so they are not scholarly sources and are not acceptable sources of information for professional or academic writing.  Also, please view our FAQ on blogs.

Students should never use information from these sites because there is no way to validate if the information is true!  When conducting research, it is best to stick with the institution’s library – in this case, Bethel’s library – so you will know without a doubt the information is scholarly!  To help identify credible sources, check out the following website from the University of Maryland: https://sites.umuc.edu/library/libhow/credibility.cfm
